Lubrication Spots To Remember During Heating Maintenance

Posted on

You might not use your heating system much in the summer but this is also a good time of year to do some heating maintenance to ensure the system is ready to go when cooler weather returns in the fall. Beyond changing the air filter, your heating system may also need some lubrication for certain parts from time to time to keep it all running smoothly. Here are some spots to keep an eye on when conducting maintenance for your heating system.

The Blower or Fan Motors

Your heating system may use a blower fan to circulate the heated air it is creating. Some heating systems, especially older ones, might have ports where you can apply oil or a bit of grease in order to help the motor run properly.

Bearings

Your heating system may have multiple bearings throughout, including within the motors just discussed. The bearings are what allow other components inside the heating system to rotate properly. Well-lubricated bearings will ensure efficient and smooth rotation for the rest of the system.

Belts and Pulleys

Your heating system may use some type of belt or pulley system to transfer power. Most belts and pulleys do not require lubrication when new, but if they are showing wear and tear or other issues, some lubrication may help until you can get the belt or pulley replaced. Proper alignment and the right amount of tension will also be things to keep an eye on.

Not Every Heating System is the Same

The above examples do not apply to every heating system that's out there today. For example, newer heating systems have a blower motor that is sealed and it will not be possible to get lubrication inside. You should not try to lubricate any parts inside your heating system unless you know what you are doing. Putting lubrication on a part that doesn't need it might actually hurt its efficiency or functionality.

Hire a Heating Maintenance Expert

Lubrication is a bit more complex of a maintenance task for a heating or HVAC system when compared with something simple like changing the air filter or swapping the thermostat batteries. For best results, you may want to look into working with a heating expert. The right professional can arrive at your home or business with the right kind of lubrication and they'll know exactly where it needs to go. Proper lubrication of heating system components may help the system run more efficiently, reduce energy costs, and extend the overall lifespan of your system.
