Troubling Myths About Typical Furnace Problems And Necessary Repairs

Posted on

To keep you and your family warm when the temperatures dip, your home's furnace really does put in a lot of working hours. However, if you are like a lot of property owners, you don't truly appreciate how important the furnace is until something goes wrong. To make matters a little worse, when something does go wrong and furnace repairs are needed, several myths could get in the way of you making the call to a furnace repair professional for help. Check out some of those myths and why they could cause more problems with your home heating system.

Myth: If the furnace is cycling on and off, you only need to reset it.

Cycling on and off can be a sign of a significant problem. You may have thermostat problems, airflow issues, or something related to the electrical relays in the system. In some cases, resetting the system will temporarily fix the problem, but the issue will soon return. Continually resetting the furnace can actually put the system at risk of developing further problems. Therefore, you are far better off contacting a service professional for advice.

Myth: Most furnace issues can be fixed by changing the filter.

The filter is a vital part of the furnace system for sure, but the filter is only related to airflow problems. You should keep your filter changed as recommended, but if you are having bigger problems with airflow, mechanical functions, or otherwise, reach out to a professional for furnace repairs.

Myth: A noisy furnce is usually not a big deal.

Noise can be a very big problem with a home furnace. For example, a scraping sound may indicate ball bearings have worn out inside the furnace's blower system. Likewise, you could have problems with a clogged-up burner, airflow issues, or some other mechanical issue. It will be best to shut down the furnace and avoid using the system until you can get furnace repairs.

Myth: If your furnace is continually blowing, you should just turn it off and on manually.

When a furnace continually blows without shutting off, you do have a big issue at play. In many cases, the limit switch on the furnace will need to be replaced. However, you may also be facing an electrical issue. While you can shut the furnace off and on manually, doing so cause undue stress on the entire system and may cause further problems.
