When a summer storm is in your area, you are going to want to make sure that you take some precautions to protect your air conditioning unit, especially because you rely on it so much during the summertime to keep your home cool and comfortable. Here are a few things you should do when a serious weather warning has been issued for your area.

#1 Turn Off Your Unit

In order to protect electronics, including your air conditioner, when a summer storm is in the area, you are going to want to turn off the unit. This is the best way to ensure that your air conditioning is not damaged. Don't just turn the temperature up so that your air conditioning is not running.  You need to turn the breaker off that provides power to your air conditioner or you need to unplug your air conditioner. You may not always be home when a storm is going to hit your area, which is why you should put in a surge protector for our air conditioning unit. This will keep objects and dust from getting inside of the outside components of your air conditioning system and will also protect it from larger objects that could dent or damage your outside unit.

When you know a big storm is approaching, it makes sense to be careful. Turn off your air conditioning or disconnect it, and cover up any outside components to protect them from the storm. Wait for the storm to pass and ensure that the power is stable before you turn your air conditioning back on. Run fans while your air condition is off to stay cool, and keep everything sealed up to keep the cold air inside of your home.
